Some Popular Furniture Designer and Their Designs

We are going to see more designs and types of furniture, which came up into prominence in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Some of these people were very influential and powerful as well. They were the Adams, the Hepplewhite, and the Sheraton, King William IV and the early Victorian. They encouraged their own styles of furniture. Later GeorgianAdam, Hepplewhite and Sheraton (1770-1810) a number of styles succeeded and partially overlapped each other during these years.AdamThe Adam brothers, Robert and James, were primarily architects, but their interest in design did not stop with the building itself. Not only did they plan the layout of their mansions, but usually they decided the decoration and coloring of the principal rooms and the furniture to go in them. Their work was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art, and most of their decorative ideas were borrowed from those sources. The honeysuckle (anthemion), the ram's head and hoof, and garlands of husks are typical features. The work of the Adams was carried out between 1760 and 1790 and many of their designs for furniture were actually made by Thomas Chippendale's firm.HepplewhiteGeorge Hepplewhite was a cabinet-maker whose business was run later by his widow, who published a book of his designs. These show pieces of simple form and small size; one of the most noticeable is perhaps the chair with a heart-shaped or a shield-shaped back. Sometimes the shield holds a pierced and carved Prince-of-Wales feather.SheratonThomas Sheraton published his first book of patterns in 1791. His designs show furniture that is much more slender in line than hitherto, and he led a return to the use of" inlay; with this his name seems to be linked inseparably. Inlay often took the form of cross banding and stringing, and a common feature was an oval shell of satiriwood, scorched to imitate shading. After about 1800, square legs were replaced by turned ones with reeding. Sheraton's most characteristic chairs have rectangular backs with horizontal bars. Use was made of satinwood, as well as the more general mahogany, either painted or inlaid or left quite plain.Regency (1800-1820)The Regency style is a combination of at least three, or any one may be found alone in apiece made during the period. The three principal styles are, Greek and Roman: figures of mythological gods and goddesses, the lyre (used as the shape of table-ends), the lion's-paw foot.Egyptian: sphinxes, Egyptian heads and feet as tops and bases of columns; crocodiles.Chinese: Chinese patterns, shapes and colors; of which the contents of the Pavilion at Brighton are outstanding examples. All types of unusual woods were used, as well as mahogany, and there was frequent use of brass for inlay and gilt bronze for mounts. Chairs were smaller in size than in earlier periods, which explain why they are so very popular today. Early Regency chairs had legs shaped like a curved sword (the saber, after which they are named), but later they were turned.William IV and Early Victorian (1820-1840)Much of this furniture can be confused with that made earlier in the Regency period. Although many of the designs are similar, they were carried out in a much heavier manner, and chairs, tables and other pieces are coarser and clumsier in appearance. The saber leg was no longer used, and almost all furniture had turned supports, often tapered and carved.Every artist gets inspiration from different sources. The Adams were inspired by the ancient Greek and Roman art. One of the most noticeable works of George Hepplewhite is perhaps the chair with a heart-shaped or a shield-shaped back. Sheraton's most characteristic chairs have rectangular backs with horizontal bars.

Home Decorating with Asian Decor and Asian Furniture

One of the recent trends in home decorating is the influence of the Far East. With its simplicity and attention to space, this lends itself well to our hectic Western lifestyle. A lot of the elements of Asian home decorating can be trace back to two schools of thought, one originating from China and the other from Japan.Feng Shui is a Chinese concept of space and object placement. Feng Shui associates the home with both health and prosperity. There are various rooms in which Feng Shui is more prevalent. The kitchen is one of them. Couple this perspective with the role of the kitchen as "the heart of the home," and you can see that any feng shui in this room can have a significant impact on your family. A few things you can try are to place Buddha statues at strategic places. Buddha statues are known to add vibrant chi power to your home. Especially the Laughing Buddha statue. Buddha statues can be made from various stones. Jade as well as bronze are the most popular choices. Quan Yin is the female version of Buddha.Common Feng Shui gifts include Chinese dragons. These dragons are said not only to provide powerful chi energy, but also keep evil spirits from entering your home. For better wealth, riches and prosperity, one can turn to Chinese Feng Shui money frogs. These frogs are made from either jade or agate. They symbolize fortune and good luck with your hard work and clever mind. If you're looking for a healthier frame of body and mind, an Asian Feng Shui crystal globe might be your answer. This is one of the most commonly used cures and produces amazing results. When sunlight hits these crystals, beams of colored light radiate in all directions activating chi energy, and can also be used to slow down chi. Incidentally, various Asian animal figures such as jade horses can also be used to the same effect. The Japanese perspective of home decorating and home furnishings is quite different. Rather than concentrate on objects to attract or repel energies, the Japanese focuses on spatial matters. It uses room dividers known as Shoji screens to separate form and function within a living space. A single Shoji screen can transform a dull square room into practical, attractive living areas. These oriental screens are often made with rice paper and can have vibrant colors or symbols. Some common designs are bamboo tree shoji screen, cherry blossom shoji screen or Geisha shoji screen. Light also plays a vital role in Japanese home design. Japanese lanterns are known for their boxy shape which reflects strength and substance. The thin rice paper allows ample light to shine through while displaying the intended images, much like the way silk paintings are. In fact, Japanese lanterns are sometime made from silk.We hope you enjoyed our brief tour about Asian d?cor and Asian furniture with a Chinese and Japanese flair.

Tips Before Buying a Coffee Table

For a long time, the coffee table was viewed as an also-ran in the glittering world of living space furniture. In the shadow of furniture pieces such as sofas, love seats, and chairs, the utilitarian coffee tables character was barely ever acknowledged. Since then, homeowners have changed their position. Most of us now recognize the real aptitude of the coffee table. An important part of the living space in its own right, this piece of furniture is now accepted as a critical piece of furniture that sets the atmosphere of living area decor. What to RememberThe style, shape, and size of your coffee table should be based on two critical criteria: the current style of your interior decor and what usage the table is going to have within the space. If young children are at home, the table should be robust and functional, whereas if you entertain often, you should keep functionality as well as appearance in mind. What Style to ChooseThe ideal table should not only become part of your living area setting, it should also be functional and sturdy. While choosing a coffee table, you must take into account its usability and convenience as well as the style of your living space.Traditional Coffee TablesTraditional coffee tables can either be elaborately carved or have a plain, understated appearance. These coffee tables are usually crafted from wood, hardwood solids, veneers, or a combination of wood components. They typically have sumptuous details, vertical lines, rigorous symmetry, and high-gloss finishes that accent formal home interior decors. Some traditional coffee tables include a decorative metal or wrought iron base with a glass top. Striking a balance between classic styling and trendy look, these tables are consistently gaining in popularity.Contemporary Coffee TablesContemporary coffee tables typically present clean lines, bold colors, and a spare, minimalist design. Modern coffee tables are regularly made from metal, glass, leather, or stone and may sport geometric or other artistic shapes. Contemporary designs in wood are in addition really prevalent. The right-sized coffee tableA standard coffee table height is typically between 16 to 18 inches. If you entertain frequently, you may like your coffee table to be higher so your guests won't be inconvenienced while setting down their drinks. One prevalent guideline is that your coffee table should be about the same height, or about 1 to 2 inches lower than the seat height of your sofa. The perfect length of the coffee table should be about two-thirds the length of the sofa. However, the right size and height of a coffee table should be determined by the dimensions of your other living space furniture in conjunction with your comfort level and convenience.

An Introduction to Antique Furniture

Furniture has been a domestic necessity in all civilisations, ancient to modern (and in-between) and has been produced in large quantities over the centuries. Developed from humble beginnings whereby the furniture was constructed out of simple designs by and large cut straight from one section of a tree to more advanced skilfully constructed pieces made possible by more advanced construction and woodwork techniques. The basic requirements and categories are few. We all need something to sleep on, chairs to sit on, tables and storage devices etc but it is the diversity within these sub-categories that is enormous.Chairs and furniture for sitting extends from the very simplest wooden stools, settles and chairs to deeply upholstered sofas and settees. A wide variety of different tables can be used for dining or other domestic usage, working, recreation purposes or just for decoration.Storage Furniture covers a multitude of varieties and uses from chests-of drawers, wardrobes, display cabinets and bookcases. Writing furniture includes bureaux, secretaires and desks. When we come to think of it, the wide variety of furniture is never more visible than when we think of the wide variety of construction techniques used and the shape and decoration. These last categories have quite often been more affected by a region or country of origin, the maker and period of manufacture.Much of the collectability of antique furniture comes from these very differences, but nevertheless just as important (lest we forget) are the aesthetic qualities of the timber that is used in the manufacture.Whether this is hardwood, softwood, solid or veneered, stained and polished wooden furniture. If the furniture is well cared for it will increase in both desirability and value.Furniture: The Basics Over the Centuries, furniture has developed from simple designs cut from one basic section of a tree or bush, with joints held together by wooden pegs, to skilfully constructed and designed pieces made using increasingly more skilful and masterful techniques. In many ways the 17th century was considered by many to be the golden era as far as furniture was concerned. After all in the UK this was the era of Thomas Chippendale (1718-79). From the 17th Century onwards, many items of furniture became smaller and lighter; seating became more upholstered for comfort. As wood turning skills developed and advanced, heavy, plain styles gave way to elegant designs with intricate carving and veneering. In the late 17th Century gilding and lacquering were introduced and the use of more exotic timbers and hardwoods began to increase with their import from worldwide.

Rattan and Wicker Furniture - What's The Difference?

Have you ever wondered what the difference between rattan furniture and wicker furniture is? If you have, I can explain the differences and some of the common misconceptions about these wonderful natural furnishings. Many people incorrectly believe that rattan and wicker are one in the same. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, they aren't even in the same category. Let's take a look at how these two popular, yet very different, arts come together to provide a unique, elegant atmosphere in the home.First let's get some facts about rattan. Rattan is a vine that grows in the tropical forests of the Far East. Usually, it grows in a pole shape with a diameter of about 1-3 inches. Rattan can grow up to hundreds of feet in length. It is also one of nature's strongest woods. Rattan cane has a solid core, unlike bamboo pole, making it much more durable and harder to break. Rattan will not warp and is ideal for making furniture. After being cut into smaller sections, the canes are then molded into shape to form the frames for various furniture items. Peel, the outer skin of the rattan pole, is traditionally used to wrap the furniture joints. Wicker, on the other hand, refers to items made from any number of natural materials, including rattan core, reed, rush, and willow. When wet, these natural materials are pliable enough to be woven, creating the unique wicker-weaved designs we see in wicker furniture. In fact, most rattan furniture is created with wicker weaved on top of the rattan core frame. Rattan and wicker are wonderful natural products, each piece having its own unique set of qualities. No two pieces are ever completely the same. Many people love the aesthetic qualities of this furniture. A great room in your home furnished with rattan can feel like a retreat to a secluded island resort after a long day at the office. Who wouldn't want to come home to that? Another common misconception is that wicker and rattan furniture is strictly for outdoor or patio use. Definitely not so. Rattan furniture comes in living room sets, dining room sets, bedrooms, office furniture and much more. Many times it is hard to find these types of furnishings locally. And, often, even if you can find them, it is usually a pretty limited selection of items. It's easy to find these great natural furnishings online. Just search the web and you will find great websites that offer authentic rattan and wicker furniture. Happy hunting!

Buying the Right Office Furniture

Buying new office furniture for your business or home office can sometimes be a guessing game. The first thing that you need to do is decide exactly what you need and how that is going to fit into your budget. If you have computers you'll have to determine if you're going to need computer desks as well as other office equipment. If you're on a limited budget one of the simplest ways that you can update your office space is to just buy a new office chair and a new desk. You'll be able to get more functionality out of the new desks that are available today, which will immediately give you more room and space for organizing your office. If you have employees that you need to buy for you may want to see if you can get a bulk deal from manufacturers. Many times, if you're buying two or more pieces of furniture you can get a discounted price. Most offices are lacking in space so don't go overboard and buy too much furniture for the amount of space that you have. Sometimes it's better to go up in space than buy another desk or table. Use shelves to add organizational space above existing desks. You don't want to create the potential for having your office look too cluttered. A cluttered office can quickly become an environment where you have little incentive to work. Try to stick to furniture that is more functional than it may be appealing to the eye. Your goal is improve the usage that you get out of your office and not to decorate a designer office. This doesn't mean that you have to buy basement bargain furniture but you should be paying more attention to function than beauty when it comes to your office furniture. Take your time before you make your final decision by bringing home some brochures to look at and see if what you want fits into your budget.

How To Care For Your Furniture

Investing in quality furniture can be a large investment; it can be the largest investment after the purchase of your home and car. I know you don't think twice about properly maintaining your car and keeping your house up to date by painting and replacing worn floors so why wouldn't you give your furniture the same care?Your furniture gets used quite a bit, especially if you have parties and get-togethers like we do in addition to having teenagers. You can make your furniture last much longer if you adhere to some of the suggestions we will give you here. The first thing should be a no-brainer, Keep your furniture clean! I know, it should be obvious but this is one of the leading causes of furniture looking bad and breaking down. Vacuum cloth furniture on a regular basis. If you have furniture constructed of leather, wipe it down with a good leather treatment product and keep your wood furniture looking new by keeping it polished with good wood oil. If your furniture is already worn, there are still some steps you can take to restore it. This is especially easy with wood furniture, as you have several options. First you can strip the furniture down, sand it and repaint it and totally change the entire look of the piece of furniture. Another option is to paint it. You can just paint it a flat color or you can choose a custom paint finish or if you are a little creative you can paint a theme on it. I painted my son's furniture with surf scenes since he is all into surfing. For minor scratches, one trick is to simply get wax crayons that are similar in color to fill in the cracks, or even shoe polish works sometimes. With upholstered furniture you can easily renew them by just having them reupholstered and get a completely new look in the process. This is another good argument for buying quality furniture. There is not point spending the money on reupholstering cheap furniture that is not built properly. If you look at some of the furniture like your grandparents probably still have, you know what I mean. They may have a couch that they have had for fifty years! And yet another way to revive tired looking furniture is to simply move your room around or switch the rooms that your furniture is in. Take the armchair that has been in your living room since you bought the house and move it to the bedroom. Take the unused chair in the spare room and move it by the front door. Simple changes like this will help you cycle your furniture from heavy use areas to light use areas, which will help maintain their life, and will help you enjoy them as if they were new.

Choosing Patio Furniture compatible with the D?cor of your Patio

When you're looking for patio furniture you'll want to choose furniture that is compatible with the design of your garden and the d?cor of your patio. Since there are so many different types of patio furniture to choose from you should have an idea in mind of exactly what you want before heading out to the store. If you don't have a firm idea of your needs you could end up looking at patio furniture and liking everything that you see, further adding to the confusion. The first thing that you need to decide is what you want your patio furniture to be made of. The choices provided by manufacturers include aluminum, wicker, wood, resin, or iron. You'll even be able to find patio furniture that combines some of these materials, such as an iron and wood furniture set. Consider how often you're going to be using your patio furniture. If you're going to be spending a lot of time outdoors on your patio you'll want to think about spending a bit more for your patio furniture than if you're only going to be using your patio on weekends. Another thing to take into consideration is the amount of care that you want to apply to your furniture. If you purchase wooden patio furniture you'll have to reseal it every year to protect it from the elements of the weather. If you live near salt water you'll find that your iron patio furniture will rust and needs care to keep it looking nice. Don't forget that you have to store your furniture during the winter months so you may want to buy something that is easy to put into your garage or other storage area. If you're buying cushions for the seats of the patio chairs keep in mind that you'll have to store these as well. Buying patio furniture isn't an exact science but the above guidelines should give you some tips so that you make some of the right decisions.

The Three Biggest Interior Design Questions

Before starting any interior design or remodeling project, you need to think about the three biggest areas. Do you know what they are? You'll find out below along with some interior design tips on how to handle themWhat To Do With The Walls? This is perhaps the biggest question and the area that can make the most difference in the outcome of your interior design. Wall color can set the tone of the room, but many people are afraid to paint their walls with anything but white. One way to get around this is to buy small samples of paint that you think you may want on the walls and paint it on a section of the wall. You don't have to paint the whole wall - just a 1 foot square section. Live with it for a day and see how it looks in all different kinds of light. Be advised, however that many colors - especially darker ones - attain their true beauty from the look of the entire wall after being layered with several coats of paint.Don't be afraid to go ahead and paint the walls - paint is cheap. If you don't like the way it looks you can always paint over it!What To Do With The Furniture?Should you buy new furniture? What if your old stuff is still good, should you have it re-upholstered? While budgetary concerns may dictate, you should evaluate the furniture for style and value versus the cost of the re-upholstering. If you are looking for a sleek modern style living room and your old sofa is a country style, you should probably consider buying new. If expense is a problem, take a trip to your local consignment store. You can buy like new furniture for a fraction of the cost and if your old stuff is still in good condition you can consign it and get some money for it to help pay for your new one. What To Do With The Floors?Decisions about floor designs should be based on your personal taste as well as your budget. Some flooring is extremely expensive and, although it may be the type that will look best with your design it may not be affordable, or even practical. When replacing flooring, you should always consider the use of the room and if the flooring will hold up well. A wood floor might be a bad choice for a kids playroom and will soon show the marks and wear of toys being slid across it. Carpeting might go well in the family room, but if you tend to eat in front of the TV you'll want to be sure to get a stain resistant type.

Patio Furniture - Coordinating Cushions, Chairs, And Canopies

Patio furniture is often the 'afterthought' in a patio design. Ideally, however, your design plans should incorporate basic ideas about patio furniture. A well-coordinated look is possible only if the patio itself, the patio awning or canopy, and the patio furniture complement one another. You have a diverse range of choices available. One of the most popular is cast aluminum patio furniture. As long as you steer clear of tubular framing, these furniture pieces are extremely functional on a patio. In spite of being fairly lightweight and easy to move about, solid cast aluminum chairs are sturdy enough to withstand the wind and weather to a large extent. In contrast to wrought iron sets, cast aluminum patio furniture won't rust. Buying the Right Bedroom Furniture

You might not consider buying furniture to be an important decision but you may find that you're mistaken when it comes to the type of furniture that you put into your bedroom. When it comes to your bedroom you should take some time before making a decision so that you choose the right bedroom furniture for the room. One way that you can make sure that the furniture that you're considering is going to fit into your bedroom is to draw out your room on paper and draw in the furniture. This way you'll be able to see if you have enough furniture for your bedroom or if you need to get rid of one or two pieces. Remember that it's not just a bed that you need for your bedroom. You're also going to need furniture for sitting on, storing your clothes in, and a desk (if you do any type of work in your bedroom). It will be your bed that is the main piece of furniture in your bedroom and everything else should center out from it. There are many different types of bed frame styles that you can choose from, including a canopy bed, a cast iron bed, or a modern wooden bed. What you pick for your bed frame will dictate the rest of the room. For instance, if you choose a bed frame that is made of a light pine wood you'll want the rest of the furniture to match. Many times you can buy a bed that is raised on a platform and has a large amount of storage underneath. This is a great way to get the storage that you need in a small bedroom. You'll also need to decide what size of bed you want: double, queen, or king size. With so many different styles of bedroom furniture for you to choose from it will all come to personal taste and preference. Just be certain that the furniture that you pick will fit into your bedroom without creating too much clutter.
